FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

A security officer protects people, property, and assets by controlling access, patrolling premises, and observing and reporting suspicious activity. Officers also respond to alarms and emergencies, assist the public, and keep incident records, either in uniform or, for specialised assignments, in plain clothes.

PSIRA grades are training levels for security officers in South Africa, running from Grade E, the entry level, to Grade A, the most senior. Higher grades cover more complex duties such as supervision, access control at sensitive sites, and the management of security operations.

Event security covers the planning and staffing needed to keep guests, performers, and property safe at functions and public gatherings. It typically includes access control, perimeter security, crowd management, and emergency response, coordinated with event organisers, venues, and local authorities.

Private security in South Africa is regulated by the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA), established under the Private Security Industry Regulation Act 56 of 2001. Security businesses and individual security officers must register with PSIRA, which also enforces the industry's code of conduct and minimum training standards.
