K9S DEPLOYED ACROSS GAUTENG AND CAPE TOWN

WIDE-AREA SITES

Covering wide-area sites around the clock, TSU dog units offer cost-effective protection, and their specialised training and acute senses lead to higher rates of detection on every shift.

HANDLER CARE

Qualified and experienced, with basic veterinary training, TSU operational K9 handlers keep their dogs in top condition—minimising downtime and making sure each team is ready to work when your site needs it.

DETECTION CAPABILITY

Adding four K9s procured from Namibia in 2025, the unit is expanding into narcotics and explosives detection and tactical roles, supported by narcotics permits secured from SAPS and the Department of Health.

COMPLIANCE AND WELFARE

Renewing Performing Animals Protection Act (PAPA) permits for 2024/2025 and passing state veterinarian audits, TSU K9 branches meet the legal and welfare standards that govern working dogs in South Africa.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

A K9 security unit pairs trained dogs with qualified handlers to protect property and support security operations. Dogs may be trained for guarding and patrol, for detecting narcotics or explosives, or for tactical work, and their presence alone is a strong deterrent to intruders.

Dogs can detect people by scent and sound long before an officer would see them, which makes them effective on large, open, or poorly lit sites. A single dog-and-handler team can cover a wide area, deterring intrusion and responding quickly to any disturbance.

Security dogs in South Africa fall under the Performing Animals Protection Act, which requires a licence to train and use animals for security purposes. Handlers must be registered with PSIRA, and facilities are subject to inspection to ensure the dogs' welfare and proper care.

Private security in South Africa is regulated by the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA), established under the Private Security Industry Regulation Act 56 of 2001. Security businesses and individual security officers must register with PSIRA, which also enforces the industry's code of conduct and minimum training standards.
